Fun Decorating Ideas For You AND Your Dog In Your New Log Home

As you know, I'm a dog person. We currently have one dog (a Black Lab), and we are finding that we've had to rethink a few things in our new log home in order to accommodate our dog. Just small things... like ways to incorporate his food & water station, types of hardwood to use on the flooring, and the easiest way to bathe him.

The aim is for the dog to have a place in the house (just like he does now), while not wrecking all of our favorite features of a log home. (He's a very big, very active dog.)

Anyway, here are some fun ways that I've found to include dog-friendly features into your new log home.

About Teak Wood Used In Furniture & Decks

| Comments (1)

So far, the only "rustic" or non-traditional type of furniture (a.k.a log furniture) that we are seriously contemplating at this time is furniture made of Teak wood.

We first fell in love with Teak when we visited the Keepsake Imports booth at a Log Home Show.

We most admired its thick and solid structure, as well as the darker color. That, and the Teak furniture pieces we have seen in person appear to be much more substantial (more solid wood, thicker frame, heavier in weight).

But I figured I better know what I was getting into if we decided to purchase some Teak wood furniture, so I did a little research.

Here's what I've learned...

Wildwood Furniture Company

If they're good enough for the 2007 HGTV Dream Home, then they're certainly worth considering for your own log home!

That's right, several pieces of furniture which appear in the Dream Home Of The Year were actually created by Wildwood Furniture Company, specifically for this one-of-a-kind log home.

This dog crate is disguised as a functional piece of furniture...

And it's an attractive one at that!

Lonesome Cottage Furniture Company

A log framed mirror from Lonesome Cottage Log Furniture Company. The first time we saw Lonesome Cottage furniture in person was the weekend of the Pigeon Forge Log Home and Timber Frame Show.

They are aggressive salesmen... I'll give 'em that! The guys who were at the Log Home Show were adept at thinking of everything we hadn't thought of, and they showed us every way possible to incorporate their furniture into our life. Overall, we appreciated that they were also very knowledgeable and helpful at the same time.

FYI, the wood used for Lonesome Cottage furniture is Northern White Cedar. The company is based out of Minnesota.

Rocky Top Log Furniture & Railing

No, this isn't Malcolm... this is Steve... the Rocky Top raccoon! We met Malcolm Stewart of Rocky Top Log Furniture & Railing when we were in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee for the Log Home and Timber Frame Show. The company's main warehouse is in Byantsville, Kentucky, but this location in Tennessee (1152 Wears Valley Road/865-774-7662) is their only public showroom.

Rocky Top was scheduled to be at the Log Home Show, but they're currently working on an upcoming episode of Extreme Home Makeover (they're "regulars" on the show now!), so they weren't able to be there. Fortunately for us, Malcolm was in the showroom the day of the Log Home Show and he gave us a personal tour around the place.

Keepsake Imports Hand-Crafted Rustic Wood Furniture

Joe Sloan, owner of Keepsake Imports. We first met Joe Sloan of Keepsake Imports at the Pigeon Forge Log Home Show.

He's based out of Ohio, but he also lives in Thailand 8 months of the year. That's where he gets all of the materials to build his one-of-a-kind modern log furniture.

All of the pieces of furniture at Keepsake Imports are made from old wagon wheels and ox horns, as well as other everyday items commonly found in Thailand and beyond.

"For over ten years, Keepsake Imports has been working hard to design, create and manufacture awe-inspiring furniture and accent pieces for timber frame homes, log homes, and cabins."
