Feng shui is a 3000 year old discipline that suggests ways to arrange various spaces so that the people living inside those spaces will prosper — both healthwise and financially.

The great thing about feng shui is that it really works! How? It teaches you how to arrange everything in your home in such a way as to have a lovely energy flow that is positive rather than negative. The effects of that are priceless.

I’ve been using the principles of feng shui for years in my own home, and have seen drastic changes in the feel of my home when I stick to those principles.

Here’s how to incorporate feng shui in the rooms of your home…

The Importance of Chi

The biggest tip in feng shui is to clear the clutter out of your home. The more clutter there is, the more difficult it is for the chi to move through your home unrestricted.

Chi is positive energy and it exists throughout the universe. The more chi you have flowing through your home, the more harmonious, healthy and prosperous your home will be.

To give you an idea of how you can use feng shui in your home, we’re going to cover the most common rooms that you might have, and then discuss some things you can do to change the overall feel energetically of those rooms so that they work with you and your family to keep them healthy and happy.

Feng Shui In The Foyer

Here are 4 things that you can do to increase the flow of chi into your home in the foyer area:

1. Paint your front door red or black. If you paint it red, you will draw good energy to your home. If you paint it black, you will draw wealth to your home.

2. Add “greeters” to your foyer. This can a piece or two of lovely artwork, a large mirror (although be sure it is on a side wall and not facing the door because you want to invite chi not send it away), or a lovely plant or two. You can even have a fish bowl on a small table or a fish tank (if you have a large foyer). The main idea is to beautify your foyer without cluttering it up. Two or three of these items would be more than adequate. Remember, in this case, less is more.

3. Place freshly cut flowers in a vase in your foyer. As with potted plants, this is a good way to draw positive energy. The key here is being sure that you replace the flowers once they begin to wilt. Don’t leave them in the foyer half-way into the death cycle because this will draw negative energy, rather than the positive energy you are hoping for.

4. Have a nice doormat in front of your door and put 9 coins underneath it. While you can use traditional Chinese coins for this, any coins will do. I personally like to use pennies for this since I always have an abundance of them lying around. One nice thing about this particular fix: if you are having money troubles, it can help to bring money into your life and help you to prosper.

Feng Shui Your Living Room

log-cabin-interior-by-Paul-Jerry.jpg Your living room is the heart of your home, and it is probably where you spend the majority of your time, so you definitely want chi flowing in a good way in this room.

Here are 4 ways you can use feng shui to increase the flow of positive chi in your living room:

1. Position all your chairs and couches so their backs are not facing any door. Also, place your chairs and couches so they follow a circular or octagonal shape. This will help chi to flow smoothly through your living room and create a harmonious air. If you cannot arrange your chairs and couches so they face the doors, then hang a mirror on the wall so that those looking into it can see the door. This is a quick feng shui fix worth trying.

2. Lighten up any corners or dark areas. You can do this by placing mirrors or bright colors in corners and dark areas in order to draw the chi to them. That way, the chi is flowing through these areas. On the other hand, if they remained dark, the chi would avoid those areas.

3. Position your furniture carefully. For example, televisions and other objects made from metal should not be placed as the centerpiece of your living room. Those types of items drain a room energy and, therefore, should never be a focal point. You want the room to be inviting to conversation and comfort instead.

4. Keep the main table in your living room clean and tidy. This table represents health, so keeping it clean and tidy will ensure the health of you and your family, as well as, the overall health of your home.

Feng Shui In The Bedroom

Here are 4 things you can do to feng shui your bedroom:

1. Place your bed where you can see the door. This is all about security. When you can’t see the door from your bed, it promotes an insecure atmosphere and makes it difficult for you to sleep.

2. Don’t place the head of your bed by a window. Why not? Because as chi dissipates from you it will go out the window, and you don’t want that.

3. Make sure your bedroom lighting is relaxing, rather than harsh. Since you want to be relaxed and restful in your bedroom your bedroom lighting should reflect this. The goal is to simply have soft lighting, rather than harsh overhead lights. Even if you have a bright overhead light, you should add other lights that will provide a softer glow, and use them whenever possible instead.

4. If you sleep with someone, have matching bedside tables with rounded edges. This will help to keep your relationship healthy and stable.

Feng Shui Your Kitchen

log-home-kitchen-by-timo_w2s.jpg According to ancient Chinese philosophy, the kitchen is where it all happens. And if you want to have a successful life, then you will want to follow feng shui when organizing your kitchen space.

Here are 4 ways to incorporate feng shui in your kitchen:

1. Place your stove such that it gives the cook a view of the entire room. Since most stoves are placed against a wall these days, this may not be possible in your home. However, one way to correct this is to hang a mirror above the stove, thus giving the cook a complete view of the kitchen.

2. Make sure that your refrigerator and stove are not placed next to each other. The reason: in feng shui, water and fire are not supposed to mix. Since the refrigerator is representative of water and the stove is representative of fire, they should not be next to each other. If they are, it could cause conflict in the home. To avoid this, try placing a green leafy plant, or even a green rug between the two appliances.

3. If you have a narrow kitchen, add mirrors around your stove (and even above it). You can also hang chimes in the doorway.

4. Use your stove. In feng shui, when you don’t use your stove the implication is that you haven’t tapped all of your resources or taken all your opportunities that have been made available to you.

Feng Shui In The Bathroom

log-home-bathroom-toilet.jpg Do you ever feel like as soon as you get any money or time or energy it flows right out of your life and out the door? Well, get this… your money, energy, and time can flow down empty drains whenever you turn the water on. It can be flushed down toilets as well! So, applying a few feng shui techniques in the bathroom is a really good idea!

Here are 4 things you can do to feng shui your bathroom:

1. Always close the lid of your toilet when you’re done using it. This will help to prevent your money and energy from being flushed away. A few fixes for this are placing a red or black rug at the base of your toilet, and/or placing a bowl of pebbles on a shelf above your toilet. Those things will help to direct the flow of chi away from going down the toilet when you flush.

2. Keep your bathroom (especially your bathroom fixtures) clean and in working order. A dripping faucet can actually draw chi to it and down the drain. And dirty fixtures actually cause money to be wasted, according to feng shui.

3. Add a full-length mirror to the front of your bathroom door. This will draw energy away from the bathroom and prevent it from being flushed or drained away from your home.

4. Add objects that represent the element Earth in your bathroom. Doing so helps to balance the water energy in the room. You can also add a crystal or a plant to your bathroom in order to help balance that energy as well.

Well, there you have it! Hopefully, by applying these feng shui tips to the rooms of your home you and your family will live healthy, prosperous and happy lives.
