GE, GE Profile & Kenmore Microwave Oven Recall

| Comments (4)

I've been writing a lot about microwaves, stoves, and other kitchen appliances lately. So I thought I'd give you a heads-up that some of the most popular microwave ovens have been recalled... 92,000 of 'em!

recalled-ge-microwave-ovens.pngYesterday's recall involves microwave combo wall ovens sold under the brand names:

  • GE

  • GE Profile

  • Kenmore

The units affected by the recall were sold from January 2000 to December 2003.

The concern is a possible fire hazard. There are reports that about 3 dozen of these microwave ovens have actually caught fire.

Anyone who has one of these microwave ovens should stop using it immediately. GE and Sears are offering either a free repair or a significant rebate on a new microwave oven.

Here's the scoop...

At first, I thought: "Uh oh... That's us!"

But ours isn't the wall unit microwave. Ours is the standalone GE Spacemaker microwave that goes above the stove.

Whew!

The GE microwave recall involves their microwave combo wall ovens ... A door switch on the microwave can overheat and potentially cause a fire. While the microwave section of the combo unit should no longer be used, the lower oven is said to be safe." Source

How To Take Advantage Of This Recall

If you think you have one of the wall-unit microwaves (GE, GE Profile, or Kenmore) and you purchased it between January 2000 and December 2003, here's what you need to do:

Step #1 See if your model number is listed here.

Step #2 Call the company.

  • GE Recall Hotline: (888) 240-2745

  • Sears Recall Hotline: (888) 679-0282

Step #3 Choose the solution that best meets your needs.

  • GE is offering a free repair, a $300 rebate toward the purchase of a new GE brand unit, or a $600 rebate toward the purchase of a new GE Profile brand unit.
  • Sears is offering a free repair or $300 rebate toward the purchase of a new Kenmore brand unit.

I have the GE Profile combo oven/microwave. The oven work great BUT the microwave is pealing and sparks when you use it. This is the 2nd oven/microwave combo and will definity be the LAST. The first was a Kenmore and it did exactly the same. And it always seems the unit you have does not meet the recall.

I am a Real Estate Professional and I sold two houses with the over the range microwaves in 2002 and both clients called with the same problem, the magnetrons are shot on each unit which causes loud noise when on and no heating and prior to that they called about sparks of fire and one did not catch in time and the inside unit was burned, and I told them to take the racks out of their units. The model numbers are as listed:
JVM1851SB 001
JVM1650WB 008
Both units are not working, what can you do for them? Are these items part of a recall? My clients would like to hear from me soon to resolve their problems and began using microwave ovens again. Lisa 678-499-4505

I have a Kenmore countertop microwave the continues to cook after cooking timer has stopped. the only way to stop it is to open the door, but once it is closed again it startes cooking. The light, vent, and turntable all stop but the microwave generator (not sure of name) keeps going. Is this what the recall was for?

I have a Kenmore Microwave purchased 9/24/01 model 665.616321. In 2005 the grill was replaced as it was cracked at the top. Now I have cracks all around the door trim and on the trim around the key pad. Seems this would definitely be a defective product. But do to its age will I get any repairs for free? Has anyone else had this complaint?
